Ron De Santis, Trump minus the crime, the flavor or the charisma, quietly signed an abortion law in Florida, that will ban the procedure after six weeks, when most women don’t even know they’re pregnant. For men whose main hobby seems to be legislating women’s bodies, they sure don’t seem to know a lot about them. It’s unclear if this is sheer ignorance of weaponized incompetence, but banning abortion after “six weeks” is basically code for virtually banning all abortions because the first four weeks of a pregnancy don’t even show up on a pregnancy test. It’s only after the first missed day of her period that a woman even knows, and that’s if she’s regular and has a 28-day cycle and most women do not! And even if she magically fits all those requirements, women are still recommended to wait one week after a missed period to take a test because the likelihood of false positives is high, which gives her seven days to go through all the hoops that the state imposes to even get the abortion. So in other words, a six-week ban is as close as you get to a full ban. To say that “six weeks is more than enough to know you’re pregnant” is fallacious and reflects a poor understanding of human biology.

This ban matters because Florida is an enormous state with a huge population whose privacy rights have just been stripped for absolutely no good reason, but it’s also significant because it’s one of the few places women can still get abortions in the South since the Dobbs decision. The one refuge for women trapped in anti-choice states, will virtually be gone.
