I’ve canceled my subscriptions to the New York Times, the Washington Post and the LA Times and now I’m using my savings to subscribe to Substack channels such as yours and as many other good writers such as yourself. While you Liz don’t have as many subscribers as Heather Cox Richardson (who does?) you write about important stuff that this 86 YO white guy reads and appreciates. Keep calling out the assholes and jerks and occasionally getting in good trouble.

You are the best, Liz. I talk about you and your work often on my own podcast. A hyper local podcast with my bff. :) So proud of you and the way you handled yourself with the old podcast. I was also heartbroken and determined to never trust men who center themselves in feminism again. So glad we have each other!
I'm ambivalent because, while I dig Airplane Mode (and Substack as a platform), the deterioration of a commons where a broad audience can engage with ideas they may not agree with is highly concerning. Having grown up in the South and lived adult life on the West Coast, I've been all too aware of how echo chambers can color and distort perception. When discourse primarily happens on a FYP and things we choose as reflections of us at a point in time, I worry about whether (and how) a kid who grew up homophobic and misogynist like I did will get exposure to different perspectives besides what already confirms their version of the truth.
I think about that a lot too, not having a common place, a common truth is such a threat to our society, i hope writers can bundle on substack and create networks together that could replace the big five but i feel saddened too... trying to stay positive for all of you, but it doesn't mean I'm not afraid too..
We love the positivity - keep that energy! Most of my online footprint is not legible English, but rather the most immature and hilarious memes I can find. Levity is essential.
This article is a great articulation about why I am spending more on supporting independent journalists like you every year that passes. I keep a budget, and I even broke it out from "Entertainment" - I call it "Content Creators." Whether they are giving financial advice, sex education, political commentary, or journalism, I see that typical media is not serving me any longer.
