The President Is Allowed To Rape You Now
The Supreme Court’s presidential immunity ruling: the ultimate patriarchal nightmare.
If Donald Trump wants to grab you by the pussy while he’s president, thanks to the Supreme Court, he now can.
In a move that can only be described as the judicial equivalent of giving the President a "get out of jail free" card, the U.S. Supreme Court has handed down a ruling that essentially grants the President of the United States immunity from prosecution for actions taken within his constitutional powers. The highest court in the land has decided that the President can now do whatever he pleases, and there will be no legal consequences. This ruling, which came in a 6-3 decision authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, threw out a lower court's rejection of Donald Trump's immunity claim. The six conservative justices were in favor, while the three liberal justices—all women—were left shaking their heads in disbelief. “With fear for our democracy, I dissent,” Justice Sotomayor wrote in her dissent.
The Ruling: Let's break it down. This landmark decision means that Donald Trump cannot be prosecuted for his actions while he was president, even those involving his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. In essence, this ruling recognizes, for the first time, a form of presidential immunity from prosecution. And while Elie Mystal at Newsweek aptly pointed out that this means that the President could theoretically assassinate people and face no consequences, it also means that the same would apply to sexual abuse, something that Trump has been found liable for and accused of incessantly.
Trump’s History of Abuse: That’s right—a man who has been credibly accused and found liable for sexual abuse is now shielded from any consequences for his actions while in office. For women across the country, this ruling isn’t just a legal technicality—it’s a chilling confirmation of the patriarchal world we live in, where men in power protect each other at our expense.
If Donald Trump wants to grab you by the pussy while he’s president, thanks to the Supreme Court, he can.
With this ruling, Trump, a man who has openly bragged about his ability to sexually assault women, is now effectively shielded from prosecution for any such actions taken while in office. The court's decision has granted Trump the ultimate power to act on his vile impulses without fear of legal repercussions.
The Stakes Could Not Be Higher: This decision is not just irresponsible; it's downright dangerous. It sends a chilling message that the highest court in the land is willing to shield a powerful man’s ability to abuse his power with no consequences. The Supreme Court has essentially endorsed a legal framework where the President can exploit, assault, and harm with absolute impunity, putting countless lives at risk. If he were to rape a White House intern and it was argued that it occurred during his "official duties," he’d never be prosecuted. So if a man wants to be a rapist, all he has to become is president. What a wonderful goal for young boys to aspire to.
This isn't just a step backward for justice; it's a leap into a terrifying future where the most powerful man in the world can exploit his position to abuse women with complete impunity.
The Patriarchal Symptom: This ruling is a reflection of the deeply ingrained patriarchal system that we’re all trapped in. It’s no coincidence that all the men on the court voted to grant this immunity, while the women (except one) understood the terrifying implications of living in a world where the President, most likely a man, would be shielded from any consequences.
Protecting Presidential Impunity, Not Women's Rights: It goes without saying that this the same Supreme Court that overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping millions of women and girls of their bodily autonomy. The justices will defend rich politicians who put them in power, but won’t lift a finger for a ten-year-old girl who is raped by a sexual predator who impregnates her. They believe President Trump should be protected to commit crimes, but millions of women don't deserve basic protections for their basic human rights. This ruling underscores a harsh reality: the law is just for the little people— not for the politicians they vote for.
A Hopeful Take: In the midst of this judicial nightmare, it’s hard to be positive, but there is a silver lining. The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade galvanized millions of Americans to vote against the GOP in response to the blatant disregard for reproductive rights. This ruling, which similarly exposes the dangerous extremities of Trump's definition of America, may provoke an even greater backlash. The prospect of a President acting with unchecked power is likely to mobilize voters who believe in accountability and justice. This decision could serve as a powerful reminder of what’s at stake, potentially leading to a significant shift in political power as Americans rally to guarantee their democracy from the encroachments of unchecked authority.
If Biden wanted a chance to divert attention from concerns about his age, this is it. He now has an opportunity to demonstrate that this election isn’t about voting for a president, it’s about making sure the other guy doesn’t get crowned king.
What do you think should happen next? Has this made you more confident in Biden’s ability to win or made you more anxious about what’s to come this November?
