Our hard work and hustle, our sincerity, our ability to have fun and be productive... all things you've said. I go to 90s nights with other middle aged folks (elder millennials like me) and we party down like it was 1999 and we're having so much fun. We just have to take a painkiller now before bed so we can move the next day for work lol.
What I love about millennials is that we have witnessed so many Unprecedented Events and have gifs from 15 years ago we can bust out at a moments notice to commemorate them.
"The truth is, they don’t hate millennials. They just wish they got to be us first."
As a 21 year old, this whole article is on point with what I witness from my peers towards millennials, especially this quote. There genuinely isn't this hate of millennials, both of our generations are in the same boat with getting fucked over.
There definitely is envy. My biggest point of envy of millennials is growing up with at least a sense of hope, not just the never-ending despair and desensitization to everything. Basically have a childhood where you weren't forced fed the horrors of the world when you're just a kid. It's jealousy out of trauma.
i’m sorry you don’t get to grow up with the optimism we had it was such a luxury and we didn’t even know it was. you should be so proud of yourself i mean it. it was easy to be happy and for your generation it’s more of a challenge so any time you’re able to take care of yourself and your mental health and your heart and spirit it’s a huge deal to extremely proud of ❤️
Thank you so much Liz. It truly does mean a lot. You are right, it may not seem like much, but taking care of yourself mentally and otherwise is very important and being able to address it is huge.
Also, I do hope my original comment didn't come off as blaming Millennials for the drop in optimism among generations. Very few Millennials were even in the work force or out of university by the time the change happened.
Your writing is excellent. Every piece is distinctly written in your voice - but it’s one that makes me (and I’m guessing many others) feel like it’s also theirs. Thanks for your work.
Something I remember as a millennial is that the typical tribal clicks like jocks/nerds/cheerleaders didn't exist everyone was friends with everyone it was great
We raised our hands to the roof to party and celebrate the wins and demand what is right. We were pre-influenced. We had Steve Colbert and John Stewart together to get us to question things not buy random stuff. We knew ads were ads and not home self tapes of our fake celebrities talking about their “favourite” product. We lived in a post tv/newspaper/radio era. We broke free with the mp3, blogs and the origin of YouTube which as you say were full of hope and optimism, we didn’t need to support monopoly media. Before it all disintegrated into particles of noise and algorithmic hate.
Thank you for writing this piece. Fellow millennials we stan. We are currently crushed in the middle with no power. I hope we can find a way out. Hopefully the era of us running things is still to come.
I love the millennial sense of humor. One thing that really resonated with me from the article is that the “group chat” has become what Social Media used to be. Just your friends, sharing anything, with no ads, and no endless scroll. Great article Liz
share something you love about millennials!
