I usually try to start with a light joke, but tonight marks a somber moment in American history. This wasn’t a debate; it was a complete disaster.
President Biden’s debate performance was nothing short of a political train wreck, a disastrous spectacle that felt like a derailment for humanity itself. Watching him stumble through responses, particularly on abortion—a topic he should have knocked out of the park given the public's fury over Roe v. Wade being overturned—was downright painful. His incoherent and evasive answers were not just disappointing—they were insulting. As I said back in February in our newsletter (with so many of you joining me), it’s time for Biden to step down for the good of the party and the country. It was evident then, and it's unmistakably clear now.
The Debate Debacle: Abortion and More
The stakes for women in this election couldn't be higher. Women and girls are already suffering because they can't access the healthcare they need. More than twenty states have completely banned or restricted abortion. The situation is so dire that the Supreme Court is debating how many organs a woman should lose before she can receive an abortion. This isn’t just a political issue; it’s a matter of life and death. Under another Trump administration, we could see a national abortion ban, along with the possible criminalizing of IVF and birth control. The fate of women cannot be between the hands of two men who can’t make complete sentences and spend their time arguing about who is better at golf. This is not a drill. Women’s health, autonomy, and very lives are on the line.
What Should Happen Next: An Open Convention
So, what happens next if Joe Biden steps down? It’s simple and entirely possible: we enter an open convention to choose a new nominee. As I explained back in February, this has happened before and it can happen again. An open convention, also known as a contested or brokered convention, happens when no candidate secures a majority of delegates during the primaries. It’s like political musical chairs, but with more stakes and less fun. Delegates are free to vote for any candidate in subsequent rounds, allowing for a new nominee to emerge. This might sound chaotic, but it’s a golden opportunity to inject fresh energy and perspectives into the race—something we desperately need right now.
Yes, an open convention might be chaotic, but it's a lot better than watching a candidate who looks like he’s about to take a nap or pass out mid-sentence on stage. We need someone who can ensure that a fascist on ozempic doesn't make it into the White House.
Biden’s Ego: A Barrier to Progress
Let’s be real—many of us are simply furious right now. This mess could have been avoided if Biden had put the country above his ego, months ago. His refusal to step aside despite clear signs that he’s not the powerhouse we need right now screams selfishness. Instead of recognizing the need for a stronger candidate, Biden’s ego has kept him in a race where he’s a liability. It's like watching someone insist on playing quarterback despite a broken arm. Time to pass the ball, Joe.
The Spectacle of Two Rambling Old Men
The debate was more like watching two rambling old men than a serious political discourse. The moderators? They acted more like enablers, failing to fact-check Trump’s countless lies and steer the conversation toward anything sensible. Instead of substantive discussions, we got incoherent rants from old men rambling about acing their cognitive tests. It was like tuning in for an Ava Duverney documentary and getting a Jerry Springer brawl instead. We deserve better.
The Broader Impact on the Democratic Party
Biden’s poor performance doesn’t just hurt his own chances—it risks dragging down other Democrats running for office. His inability to present a strong front could cost the party seats in Congress and state legislatures. It’s like the lead actor bombing on opening night and dooming the entire production. Even a candidate with a criminal conviction looked good by comparison.
Trump appeared dangerously normal when he was standing next to Biden. In fact, when I went to my first Trump rally since his conviction in Arizona, what shocked me was how regular it was. The crowd wasn’t a fringe group of angry white men, it was moms with their teenage sons and diverse groups of people and families. The enthusiasm gap between the two candidates is glaring, and no one under 30 will be motivated to vote for Biden after witnessing this lackluster excuse for a debate.
“It’s Too Late”
Many democratic supporters are already saying it’s “too late,” which is exactly what we were told four months ago when we called for Biden to step down, facing backlash and criticism, mostly from fellow Democrats. I couldn’t even post about my column as I usually do, because the comments from progressives were so awful. Fast forward a few months, and here we are. While it’s not too late for Biden to step aside, it’s dangerously late. And the more time we spend debating it, the more time continues to pass, and our window continues to narrow. This entire debacle could have been avoided if we’d taken action sooner, so let’s stop debating it and just rip the band-aid off.
Conclusion: The Way Forward
For the sake of the party and the nation, President Biden must step down. An open convention is the Democrats’ last chance. Voters witnessed a broken democratic system during the debate, and without a viable option, they may lose faith in democracy itself. If we fail to act now, we risk plunging the nation into a dark era where the core values of democracy and individual freedoms are jeopardized. This is a pivotal moment—failure to act now could unleash devastating repercussions for women and threaten the very foundations of our democracy.
But there’s still hope! If we take bold and decisive action and keep the pressure on, we can protect our future. It’s time for Joe Biden to take a much-needed nap, binge-watch Love Island, and let a new leader grab the steering wheel before we end up in a ditch.
